Cost for foreigners 50k. A guide is mandatory, for which you have to pay extra an unspecified amount. Well organised and no hassle. My guide was very good and spoke excellent English. The tour takes about 45 minutes. Many portraits of royal people. Some antique gamelan orchestras. The ornate interiors are roped off, so it amounts to wandering around a couple of nice courtyards and peering at some interesting artefacts from afar. For me, with no serious interest in the royal persons, it was a mildly interesting way to spend an hour. |

An interesting place. Our English-speaking guide Susie was informative. However I found out after we had left the palace that my brother and I, who are locals, were charged the foreigner's ticket price of Rp.40-thousand. I think that this was a very dishonest thing to do. |

Hard to see why this gets such good reviews. The area around the palace is like a giant dirty car park. Pity some of the King's retinue don't stoop to collecting litter. The palace itself is OK but you have to have a guide. The wooden structures are quite interesting and there are one or two nice courtyards but there really isn't that much of interest here. Lots of paintings of various past monarchs (they are Kings of the city of Surakarta) and their wives and family, small gift shop. Disappointing but not expensive. We tipped 150 IDR as per Lonely Planet recommendation but that seems pretty OTT for the tour which was very basic. |
